when a wifi network is not connecting

I was getting this “error: a connection timeout occurred” when trying to connect to my wifi network at home, and the solution was ever elusive. So this is a note to self – instead of allowing the wifi router (in my case, a Belkin N300) to auto select its channel, I set it to channel 11. It had defaulted to channel 1 on its own selection, but that might have run into another wifi router in the neighborhood, and when channels overlap, wifi signals can overlap and create a messy grab for all. Now things are working much better. I hope this resolves it once and for all.
